Installation Guide - Reinstalling Your Repaired VanMoof eShifter

Follow these 14 steps to reinstall your repaired eShifter and get your VanMoof S3 or X3 shifting again:

  1. Gear Ring Preparation: Twist the inner gear shifting ring counter-clockwise when holding the wheel in the position it was removed from the hub. If it moves without force, good. If it has grit or grime, clean with WD40 spray and use light oil.
  2. Locate the Dot Tab: Look inside the eShifter cavity for the tab with the dot (the largest tab). The washer molded into the shifter has a notch for the flat spots on the axle - this rarely needs to be moved, as it is pressed into the case, but if needed, can be adjusted when you use pressure for fine adjustments. Video guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyDecZQhlAw
  3. Axle Positioning: On the wheel, set the axle with the frame locking tabs in the upright position. You'll see a large space on the gear changing cog where the dot tab slides into.
  4. Verify Alignment: When properly aligned, the shifter will not have an angle, and the gear changing cog will not be visible with a flashlight shining into it.
  5. Install Flat Washer: Place the flat washer on the outside of the eShifter.
  6. Tighten Flat Nut (WARNING): Use the VanMoof wrench to tighten the skinny flat nut. Do NOT over-tighten! Light tightening is sufficient. Over-tightening when gears are misaligned will crack the case and allow water ingress - the original cause of failure.
  7. Reinstall Wheel: Install the wheel in the bike. Make sure any round washers go inside the chain stay to help align the brake disc. The washers with the notches go on the outside of the frame. Tighten the axle nuts using the VanMoof security nut tool. Video guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdIeioy5_4A
  8. Connect Cable: Plug in the cable carefully, avoiding bending the tiny pins inside.
  9. Seal Cable Entry: Snap the cable's water ingress preventer for the frame.
  10. Chain Tensioner: Loosely tighten the chain tensioner assembly, then align by turning pedals forward and backward while making slight left-right adjustments to eliminate chain noise. Don't over-tighten (aluminum threads).
  11. Test Shifting (Up): With bike upside down, turn it on, spin the front wheel in the forward direction, pedal forward - the wheel will begin to spin. You'll feel the gears changing and pedaling getting harder.
  12. Test Shifting (Down): Stop pedaling and stop the rear wheel. As the front wheel slows, you'll hear the rear shifter changing from 4→3→2→1 after the front wheel hits the targeted speeds.
  13. Final Check: Check rear axle nuts for tightness, turn bike right-side up, and enjoy your like-new VanMoof!
  14. Brake Alignment: If brakes squeak or rub, loosen the two Allen bolts per caliper, hold brake lever to engage, then retighten. This realigns the brakes.
